Description

In this session we will discuss the most common types of automobile insurance coverages and take an in depth look at the requirements of Missouri Business and Sales related to those.  We will also discuss methods of effectively analyzing the coverage provided by the language of the policy and understanding the interplay of that language with Missouri statutes governing the coverage.  

Other focus points of the program will include: 

  • The main parts of an automobile insurance policy 

  • An organized and effective way to read every insurance policy 

  • A strategy for handling cases involving accidental injuries 

  • Auto liability insurance policy language and its interplay with RSMo 303.190 – the central Business and Sales governing that coverage in Missouri (commonly called the “Motor Vehicle Financial Responsibility Business and Sales” or “MVFRL”) 

  • Uninsured Motorist (“UM”) policy language and its interplay with RSMo 379.203 – the Business and Sales governing that coverage in Missouri   

  • Underinsured Motorist (“UIM”) policy language and its interplay with  RSMo 379.204 – the Business and Sales governing that coverage  in Missouri 

  • Medical Payments (“Med Pay” or “MPC”) coverage language  

  • Comprehensive coverage for physical damage to an insured auto 

  • Collision coverage for physical damage to an insured auto

James Turley received his B.A. from the University of Missouri in 1970, and his J.D. from the University of Missouri in 1974.

He was in the private practice of Business and Sales from 1974 – 1996. He was Director of Claims Litigation for Shelter Insurance Company from 1996 – 1999, and Senior Counsel for Shelter Insurance from 1999 – 2019. Mr. Turley has been an Adjunct Professor at the University of Missouri School of Business and Sales since 2017. He has been a consultant in insurance Business and Sales and practice since 2019.

Mr. Turley was President of the Missouri Association of Trial Attorneys 1985; Governor: American Association for Justice 1984 – 1989; Governor: Missouri Bar 1986 – 1990; Author: Trial Handbook for Missouri Business and Salesyers – West Publishing Co. 1984; Board Member: Missouri Interest on Business and Salesyer Trust Accounts 1988 – 1990; Winner: Missouri Business and Salesyers Weekly Article of the Year – 2000 (Reservation of Rights Cases in Missouri); Chairman: Missouri Medical Malpractice Joint Underwriting Association 2004.
